Enjoy the beach
Enjoy these beautiful beaches and watch the high tide and low tide. For those who are cold and wouldn’t risk swimming, they can always play on its beaches. My daughter was like crazy, because at low tide you can run on miles of beaches with barely wet feet.
As for activities, just take a water and go looking for shells; or observe marine life and molluscs at low tide, so your children will be delighted! Why not make a sand castle, or create a mini swimming pool by digging with your rake or even a dam with the help of the whole family? The play possibilities are endless and our little ones have imagination!
Sometimes simple pleasures are the best. 😉
A wonderful night for kids
In Ouistreham, a small seaside town, you’ll find plenty of games for the little ones; inflatable structures for the more active, and Ferris wheels for the older ones; right next to the sea there’s a free play area as well as two carousels and duck fishing for the little ones.
To continue with the little pleasures of the late afternoon, why not indulge in a waffle or an ice cream at the Pause Gourmande? For those who want to finish off the day with a meal outside, I recommend Gourmet Grill’s chicken kebabs – delicious!
A walk on the “Estuaire de l’Orne”
I recommend a short hike to the Orne Estuary to enjoy the magnificent panorama. I advise you to do this walk without a stroller, as the roads at the end are sandy and therefore difficult to access. Take out your baby carrier for the occasion! The lucky ones will be able to see the rich fauna of the estuary: fish, jellyfish, we go there above all to observe migratory birds.
The phare and the fish market
The Ouistreham lighthouse is 171 steps high, giving you a breathtaking view of the town and its horizons. At the top, you’ll be 38m above sea level, and you’ll be able to see the boats passing by, including the ferries that link England to France. Tours are open on weekend afternoons in July and August.
A stop at the fish market is a must, where you’ll find all kinds of fresh fish and seafood – a real treat!
I’ll leave you with some ideas for seafood and fish recipes:
- swordfish barbecue
- cod papillotes
- seafood cassolettes
Sport activities
Ouistreham was a great sporting discovery. There’s something for all ages.
A horse-riding center close to the sea offers horseback rides. If you’re more into water sports, you can try your hand at paddling with OCEAN. Or go sand yachting if you’re more comfortable on land.
Last but not least, for a sporty family outing, Ouistreham offers magnificent cycle paths overlooking the seafront.
Enough to keep the kids happy and the trip memorable.
Discover the surroundings
Finally, if you have the move, Ouistreham is not far from beautiful cities to discover:
- Cabourg: for a splendid fine-sand beach
- Caen: Visit the two magnificent Abbeys and the old town and go shopping in this lively city and explore the Birds Park with its farm and animals
- Luc sur mer: a small town with a magnificent whale skeleton in its town hall and a beautiful beach with good restaurants.
- Bayeux: We can’t talk about Bayeux without mentioning the Bayeux tapestry, a true masterpiece. The splendid Notre Dame Cathedral and the American Cemetery are also well worth a visit.
- Colleville sur Mer: a town steeped in history, Colleville sur Mer bears witness to the war and its aftermath. Omaha Beach, the American cemetery, and the D-Day museum all bear witness to the harshness of the landings.
If you have a vehicle and have more time, you can also visit Cherbourg and Le Havre, my sister has written city guides on these two cities.
Tell me in the comments if your children enjoyed their trip 🙂
